To review, a retrograde doesn’t mean that a planet is literally reversed in its orbit – it’s just slowed down, and appears to be going backwards from our perspective on Earth.
Most people are familiar with Mercury Retrograde, the most infamous planetary reversal of all. The first one of the year begins on February 6 and ends on the 28th. But that ain’t all, folks, so don’t think you’re going to be free of that backwards feeling as the weather warms. (In fact, the year actually BEGAN with two retrogrades, which we’ll get to in a second.)
Planets other than Mercury go retrograde all the time, but right now we’re experiencing a rare foursome of personal planets sliding into reverse motion one by one (and overlapping from time to time). Jupiter (the planet of luck and expansion) has been retrograde in Cancer since late 2013, and won’t go direct until early March.
Venus, the planet of love and beauty, started the year retrograde in Capricorn, creating an extended murky moment for relationships. That retrograde ended on January 30. But by then, we’re already in the shadow of Mercury Retrograde. Then just after Mercury finally goes direct, Mars (the planet of action, drive and power) goes retrograde in Libra on March 1, overlapping with Jupiter. Mars doesn’t go direct until May 19; finally, at long last, ending the emotional whirlwind we’ve been in.
So how do you cope with the inherent slowdowns, slip ups, and stoppages? The Mars/Venus theme is strong here. We’re being asked to review our relationships and our desires and to establish what we really want and need from others. The key is to take a cue from the universe and slow down -- you can’t force anything now. You can’t push a partnership past its limits, but you’re likely to see what’s blocking you now.
The planetary slowdown is perfect for reviewing your patterns, going all the way back to your relationship with your parents as a child. You can see, in stark relief, how your partner is a stand-in for your mother and father. The good news is, you can heal that pattern now.
Your keywords: REview, REwind, REnew, REorder, and finally, RElax. Don’t take on more than you can handle, and expect certain things to break down -- only to show you where the cracks in your armor exist. The most important RE of all is REpair. That’s what you’re being tasked to do now.
